Outdoor Recreation

Living and working downtown doesn’t mean sacrificing proximity to the great outdoors. While Georgetown is located near the central Texas Hill Country, residents and visitors needn’t travel far to take advantage of wooded trails and expansive parks. With a concentrated focus on maintaining green space on the Square and in surrounding areas, the city has worked hard to balance modern amenities with natural charm.

Hiking and biking and golfing, oh my!

Venture over to Blue Hole for a refreshing dip or an afternoon of fishing. The shady trees make for a good picnic spot and the shallow water near the shore is perfect for wading. It’s a splendid spot for families.

Georgetown’s San Gabriel Trail is easily accessible from many points around town, including the downtown square. The trail was made for biking, walking, and running; rollerblades, scooters, and skateboards; nature hunts, Geocaching, and wild-woods exploring. You can venture as far as the lake or as near as the playground and always have a great time.

For a little organized sporting fun, a game of disc golf through San Gabriel Park is just the ticket.

Several local youth and adult sports leagues hold games and matches at McMaster Athletic Complex, located nearby San Gabriel Park and the downtown area.

Residents on and off the Square find the dog (and human) socialization at the Bark Park to be top-notch. Boasting six acres of room to run and obstacles to conquer, large and small dogs alike love it here!

For edge-of-your-seat college sports, Southwestern University is the home to several championship athletic teams, and this year brings the return of men’s football and inaugural season of women’s varsity lacrosse. The proximity to downtown and welcoming atmosphere on campus make it easy to check out an evening basketball game or afternoon tennis match.

Youth and adult sports leagues, fitness facilities, and indoor and outdoor swimming comprise the Georgetown Recreation Center, in addition to the the 1.6 mile looping granite trail located just outside. The in-house childcare center makes it all possible for busy moms and dads.

Outdoor sporting fun can be found at the athletic fields of San Gabriel Park and McMaster Athletic Complex – soccer, baseball, softball, and tennis are all enjoyed here, by athletes and spectators alike!
